A Guide To Getting A Truck Licence - Part 1

Here you can find all the information you will need to successfully complete a Truck Licence Course as well as a step-by-step guide.

Getting a Truck Licence in NSW can be a confusing process, but don’t worry, with our easy to follow guide you will find the process is actually very straightforward and simple.

This information is tailored for those who are wishing to go from a Car Licence to a Rigid Heavy Vehicle such as Light Rigid (LR), Medium Rigid (MR) or Heavy Rigid (HR), however, this information is still useful for those who wish to upgrade their existing heavy vehicle licence.

The first step in getting your Heavy Vehicle Licence is deciding which course you would like to do. An important part of this process is asking the question “Why Do I Need A Truck Licence?”.

The majority of people upgrade their licence to increase their chances of employment or for a job they already have, other people however, upgrade to a Heavy Vehicle Licence because they have bought a new motorhome, horse truck and even “just because!”.

Below is a list of jobs that may require you to have a Truck Licence:

Job Licence Class
Paramedic / Ambulance Driver Light Rigid (LR)
Courier (Small Truck) Light Rigid (LR)
Bus Driver Medium Rigid (MR)
Fire Fighter Medium Rigid (MR)
Concrete Agitator Driver (Full-Size) Heavy Rigid (HR)
Coach Driver Heavy Rigid (HR)

“The first step in getting your Heavy Vehicle Licence is deciding which course you would like to do.”

Now comes the time to make the decision on which class of licence you wish to get.

The second part of this decision making process will be:

Do you want to get the minimum class of Truck Licence needed
or
Do you want the highest class of Truck Licence that you are eligible for?

Have you made your choice between Light Rigid, Medium Rigid or Heavy Rigid? If you haven’t it’s okay, this is where the friendly and professional team at AHVT steps in.

You can Contact AHVT at any time and we will be more than happy to help you with your decision.
